James Owens, Sr., 81, of Cartersville, GA passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2016. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. The body will lie in state at the church from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of service. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 from 7:00pm - 8:00 p.m. at the Mack Eppinger and Sons Funeral Home.

James Owens, Sr. son of the late Reverend J.C.and Rosa Owens was born on December 25, 1934 in Mineola, Georgia (Lowndes County). He served in the military as a member of the Air Force. He graduated from Savannah State University where he received a degree in Industrial Arts. After finishing his formal education , he and his family moved to Cartersville. He taught mathematics in the Bartow County School System for 35 years and served as a substitute teacher for 10 years upon retirement. He also worked at other places including the Cartersville Country Club, the Elks Club, and the Cartersville Mines.

James Owens, Sr. was active in the Cartersville community as a member of Mt. Zion Church and the New frontier. He had several hobbies such as metal detecting, sitting on his front porch and fishing and hunting in his younger years.

James Owens, Sr. is survived by his devoted wife, Luvenia Owens. They were married for more than 61 years at the time of his passing. His loving memory will also remain with his sons; James Owens, Jr. (Peggy), Ronald Owens, Shedrick Owens, Tim Owens (Precious); two daughters; Debbie Ramseur (Donald), Angela Little; and a bonus daughter Taka Allende (Alex); two sisters, Martha Gray (Ronnie) of Hahira, GA and Annie Callum (Al) of Midville, GA.; two brothers, Lessie Owens (Lila) of Hahira, GA and Edward Lee Owens ( Christine) of Valdosta, GA; one uncle, Alfonso Owens of Ocilla, GA; three sister-in-laws, Margaret Owens of Savannah, GA, Joyce Owens of Athens, GA and Anna Owens of Cincinnati, OH; brother-in-law, Warren Calhoun (Minnie) of Valdosta, GA; 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; devoted nieces, nephews, caring cousins, neighbors, special friends and a host of other relatives and associates.
