Mr. James Dewey McConnell, aka "JD", 86, formerly of Adairsville, Georgia passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2019. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at 12:00pm (Noon) at Adairsville Church of God, 297 Old Dixie Hwy., Adairsville, GA. 30103. The body will lie in state in the church from 11:00am until the hour of service. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens, 790 Indian Mound Road SE, Cartersville, GA 30120.
JD was born on February 16, 1933 in Adairsville, Georgia to the late James "Jake" and Nellie Mae Trimble, whom provided a strong foundation by putting God first, cherishing family and believing that going back on your word lowered your character. He graduated from the Bartow County School System. He had a passion for baseball and barbering. JD was determined to build a life for himself and shortly after graduation he enlisted in the United States Army.
He met and married the late Martha Barton McConnell. Their union lasted well over 45 years and was blessed with six loving and devoted daughters. His career as a soldier led to several deployments to Germany, Korea, Italy, Vietnam, Texas and finally residing in Atlanta, Georgia. After 20 years of service, he retired Honorably from the United States Army and began working for the United States Post Office. He was a proud worker and a dedicated member of the American Postal Workers Union.
JD's family was his pride and joy. Daddy loved and adored his children, Teresa (Vic) Beasley, Ricky (Keisha) , Peter (Diane) , Yolanda, David (Laura), Antonio (Sharon), Tammy, Stacey (Eric), Deirdre, Trinia, Courtney and Decorian (Lowell).
His second love was the fact that he's a Veteran, having served his country; Jazz, fishing, the home teams: Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Hawks and the Atlanta United and sharing stories of his life changing experiences as a soldier.
Over the years , he spent countless hours talking and visiting with his siblings: William Cecil (Erma), Nelson (Thelma), Mary Caruthers and Helen Jean; as well as , his sisters-in-law Grace Grimes (Larry), Betty James (Thomas) and Gladys Barton. He was blessed with a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Nellie Mae; wife, Martha Barton McConnell; sister, Helen Jean McConnell and brother, William Cecil McConnell, Jr.
