Mrs. Mary Ann Pollard

Mrs. Mary Ann Pruitt Pollard, 71, of Winston, Georgia, formerly of Houston, Texas, passed away on Monday, January 01, 2018. 

Mary Ann Pollard, affectionately known as “Honey” to her grandkids and all who loved and knew her, was born on October 17, 1946, in Simsboro, Louisiana, to the late Melvin and Mary Pruitt.  She was the youngest of her four siblings.  She was preceded in death by both parents and her older sisters, Wordie Pruitt Jackson and Josie Pruitt Morgan.

As a young child, Mary Ann and her family moved to Houston, Texas, and it was there where she made her confession of faith and was baptized at Mt. Corinth Baptist Church at a young age.  As a youngster, summer jobs were few, so Mary spent time helping her parents at the Hotel in which they managed; she also spent her summers in Longview, Texas, with one of her favorite cousins, Cleophus Harris-Morrison, who was more like a sister to her.   This tradition continued until Mary graduated from high school.

Mary Ann was educated in the Houston Public School System and was a proud graduate of Phyllis Wheatley High School class of 1964.  After graduation, she continued her education at Texas Southern University.  Several years later she married Donald Pollard, Sr., and to this union, the apple of her eye was born, Don, Jr., also known as “Boek”, a nickname which was given to him by his grandparents. 

In 1981, she and her son moved to California to start a new life.  Their first stop was Planada, California, with her brother, Melvin (MB), and her nephew and niece, Damon Pruitt and Letra Pruitt Ellis. After one year, they then moved to San Francisco where she successfully lived and worked in the banking and financial industry for many years.  The beautiful city of San Francisco soon became home to them and was also the beginning of many beautiful relationships, especially one with the Middleton family.  Corrine and Pamela Middleton, along with the Middleton men: Troy, Troy Jr., Dennis, Glen, Mark, and Keena, soon became her new West Coast family.  Mary was given the honor of being named Godmother of Kanema Middleton, daughter of Dennis and Pamela.  

Mary Ann worked hard to earn a living for her and her son and made sure he attended the college of “her dreams”, Morehouse College.   In 1992, after “Boek” moved to Atlanta to attend Morehouse, Mary Ann returned to Houston to live and help her mother care for her ailing father.  She lived and continued to work there in the banking industry.   She enjoyed being back among her family, especially with her sisters, nieces, and nephews.

After the marriage of her son and birth of her grandchildren, Mary Ann moved to Georgia in 2006, to be with them.  It was a blessing to have her close.  In-house babysitting was now a shared venture between the two grandmothers, and she loved every minute of it.  She soon joined Word of Faith Family Worship Cathedral where Bishop Dale C. Bronner is pastor.  While here in Georgia, she obtained her first job and was happily employed by her son in his law office.  However, she was not the typical employee, as she took care of her important business first… phone calls and lunch!  Shopping was also a very high point of her enjoyment.  She enjoyed shopping at flea markets, thrift stores, and her very “special store”, Marshalls.  She loved finding those special finds and those perfect gifts that she shopped for so tenderly.

“Honey’s” memory will forever be cherished by those who loved her, especially her son and daughter-in-law, Don, Jr. and Meleisa Pollard; four darling grandchildren, Chandler Alexander, Lailah Jolei, Karrington Milan, and Chase Luke Pollard; one brother, Melvin Pruitt;  very special nieces and nephews, Terrilyn (Delaney) Morgan-Ratcliff, Damon Pruitt, Danielle Morgan, Letra  (James) Ellis, Timothy Callier Jr., Kierra Ellis, Trinity Ratcliff, Donovan Jacob; special cousins, Cle and Billy Morrison; special sister-in-law, Patsy Johnson; special family, Dennis and Pam Middleton, Glenn (Gina) Middleton, Mark (Tami) Middleton, Keena and Kanema Middleton; In-laws, the Jones and Carson families; and a host of extended family and friends.

Services will be held Thursday, January 11, 2018, at 11:00 A.M. at The Word of Faith Family Worship Cathedral, 212 Riverside Parkway, Austell, Georgia 30168 with Rev. John Williams, officiating.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service.  Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cartersville, Georgia on January 11, 2018, at 3:00 P.M.
