Betty Jane (Upshaw) Buffington

Mrs. Betty Jane Buffington, 77, of Cartersville, Georgia passed away on Friday, December 11, 2020.

A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at 12:00 P.M. (Noon) at Oak Hill Cemetery, 319 N. Erwin Street, Cartersville, Georgia 30120.

Due to COVID-19 regulations and guidelines, physical distancing practices will be in place, and MASK ARE REQUIRED for those that will be attending the service. The family is the main concern during this time of bereavement and space will be limited. We have to ensure the family is able to attend the service, so there is a possibility of some friends not being admitted. However, the service will be LIVE-STREAMED.

Betty Jane Upshaw Buffington was born on December 5, 1943 to the late James Henry and Bertha Goodwin Upshaw.  Following a brief illness, she entered into eternal rest on Friday, December 11, 2020.  Betty was educated in the Bartow County School System and graduated from Summer Hill High School. 

Betty accepted Christ at an early age and united with New Hope Baptist Church in Rydal, Georgia. Years later, as an adult, she united with New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Cassville, Georgia and was a very active member.  She sang in the Senior and Mass Choirs, as well as served on the Usher’s Board.

Betty and her siblings had a love and gift for singing, something that was instilled in them at an early age.  Betty’s love for singing would later lead her becoming the founder and president of The Bartow Community Mass Choir.  It was here that she sang alongside six of her ten siblings and several others members within the area.

One of Betty’s greatest joys was cooking and spending time with family and friends. She was a natural born caregiver. Betty worked for the Collins family for over 30 years. In most recent years, she worked for the Knight family.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, James and Bertha Upshaw; and sisters, Alice Bell Summerize, Dorothy Elizabeth Williams, Sarah Christine Brown, Cora Mae Smith, Mary Laura Webb and Martha Ruth Bonner.

Betty leaves sweet memories and legacy of love with her children, Robert Buffington, Jr. of Cassville, Georgia, John Henry Buffington (Larah) of Dallas, Georgia, and Christy Ann Holloway (Charles) of Chattanooga, Tennessee; grandchildren, Christopher Buffington, Jeremy Buffington, Nashay Buffington, Ashley Christian, Ravian Christian, Blake Buffington, Rae’shaun Holloway, Evan Erickson and Daniel Erickson, as well as her 8 great grandchildren; siblings, Henry Leroy Upshaw (Helen) of Lithia Springs, Georgia, Flora Mae Bryant, Helen Juanita Duster and James Dean Upshaw (Lois) all of Cartersville, Georgia; a special sister-in-law, Mary Valdez (Oscar); a dear Goddaughter, Kaelyn Treneice Akles; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members.
