Ethel Johnson Obituary

Mrs. Ethel Marie Martin Johnson, 91 of Cartersville, Georgia passed away on Monday, January 3, 2022 surrounded by her loving family. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, January 10, 2022 at 1:00PM at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, 1 Mount Olive Street, Cartersville, Georgia 30120. The body will lie in  state in the church from 12:00PM (Noon) until the hour of service. Interment will follow in Providence Cemetery, 165 Old Tennessee Rd NE, Cartersville, Georgia 30121. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers as they go through this time of bereavement.

Due to COVID-19 regulations and guidelines, physical distancing practices will be in place, and MASK ARE REQUIRED for those that will be attending the service. The family is the main concern during this time of bereavement and space will be limited. We have to ensure the family is able to attend , so there is a possibility of some friends not being able to attend. However, the service will be LIVE-STREAMED.

Ethel Marie Johnson passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, January 3, 2022, at the age of 91. She was born February 16, 1930 to Ruby Knuckles-Martin and Aaron Martin, Sr. She was their first child, but later her parents had nine other children.

Ethel attended Summer Hill High and later went on to become a machine operator at World Carpet before retiring. Ethel was married to John Willie "Bill" Johnson and this union produced twelve children. She was a devoted Christian who raised her children "in the church." 

Before being diagnosed with dementia, she loved reading, crossword puzzles, watching gospel shows, talking with her children and grandchildren and taking rides with her oldest daughter- Lavinia Elliott- and her sisters. She also was not shy about telling her children what was on her mind. 

Ethel was a longtime member of Macedonia Baptist Church and raised many of her children there.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Aaron and Ruby Martin; brothers, Aaron Martin, Jr., and Reuben Clifton Martin; sisters, Catherine Martin and Betty Jean James; and her children, Joyce Regina Johnson, Michael Laverne Johnson and Amanda Lorraine Johnson.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her devoted daughters, Sonia Wiggins (the late Horace Wiggins) and Greta Johnson- who served as her primary and secondary caregivers; other daughters, Lavinia Diane Elliott (Hershel), Darlene Garnigan- both of Cartersville and Faith J. Jones (Danny)- of Tyrone , GA; sons, Willie Eugene Johnson, Aaron Darnell Johnson, Mitchell Lynn Johnson and John Patrick Johnson(Desirrae) all of Cartersville, GA; sisters, Dorothy Miller, Evelyn Moore and Marilyn Martin all of Cartersville; brothers, Bobby Joe Martin (Kharon) of Las Vegas, NV., and Ernest (Mildred) Martin of Cartersville, GA ., she also leaves behind special grandchildren whom she raised, Tiffinee Upshaw, Nicholas Johnson and Eric Greene all of Cartersville, GA.; and a host of other special grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
