On March 30, 2020 God called our beloved Gwenie home. Born Gwendolyn Fowler to her adoring parents Jarod (Jew Baby) and Marvella Fowler, she was the light of their world and they affectionately called her Gwenie – which became a term of endearment for many. To know their Gwenie was to feel some of the love shared so freely in her childhood home and see the beautiful smile that touched so many.

Gwen found Christ at an early age and was a member of Damascus Baptist Church for many years. She led with love, never judgement, always willing to see that every situation was individual. Her warmth and beauty drew in the young and old alike. She graduated from Summer Hill High School June 1965. Gwen was a lover of people, never shy of a stranger, and her beauty came in second only to her open heart. With all that love, children flocked to Gwen. Her warm smile and patience made her first job at Emerson Elementary School as a Paraprofessional a natural fit. She loved working with children in the special education program and held a special place in her heart for all the children she was blessed to work with over the years. As life changed Gwen joined Lockheed Martin and the culture has never been the same. She was smart, dynamic, beautiful and flirty. Her smile not only stopped traffic and many a man’s heart, she was a mediator for all in need while at work. The ever-present beauty used her gift to remind people to look beyond what they thought they knew about one another. Even if you didn’t like what she said her smile would make you forget why you disagreed.  Gwen retired after 30 years of dedication, fun and let’s face it, mischief. She was a constant friend and smiling companion to many who worked at the facility and many miss her smile even more today. She was always flawless in her style, unyielding in her beauty and free with her smile. She was a diva and wore the crown. She was flawless even as she lost her ability to be the quick-witted charmer we knew and loved – her crown was always on point.

Gwen was beautiful, intelligent, creative, loving, giving and dependable. Yes, all of this is true – if you met her you saw a rare swan. Her creative nature blossomed when she began to design her black angels and figurines. Gwen was a member of the Eastern Star Association. She loved to cook, bake cakes and generally make you feel loved the moment you came in her presence (and if not loved, be ready for the real truth as she would give you that, too!)

Gwen will be welcomed to her heavenly home by her parents Jarod and Marvella; brother, Willard Scrutchins and beloved niece Tereonne Jones. What a welcome table – we will see her again!

The love of Gwen’s family was the highlight of her life. She was blessed with two beautiful daughters, whom she loved like a proud mama lion, Valerie Maxwell and Kendra Andrews, as they ensure her beauty and strength will live on. Her joy exploded as she met (and spoiled) each of her grandchildren, Bianca Edwards, Gregory Edwards, Xavier Hendricks, JaMaya Davis and Indya Coaxum (The Boss), and great-grandchildren, Maison Wilkey, Aiden Hendricks and Mylo Wilkey. Her baby sister, Loraine Fowler was her first baby girl and she never let her forget who was in charge. Gwen ruled the family throne with authority and humor because truth doesn’t have to hurt. She also leaves to cherish her great nephews, Trystan and Brent Williams; niece, Rita (Jimmy) Smith; and aunt, Barbara Fowler whom held a special place in her heart. Beyond the immediate family circle – she looked forward to her visits from Doris Shaw and Diane Gardner on Wednesdays. Frank Wiley and Donna Fowler were close friends as the storm of memory loss became too much to bear. She was loved by a host of family and friends.

Our Gwenie/GiGi made us laugh and cry as she left us little by little, but mostly she taught us to love and live life to the fullest. She never half stepped on love, family, fashion or kindness. She gave and taught us so much. We can only Thank God that she’s at rest. Although we are lost without her, we will persevere because of her.
