On the evening of Thursday, June 19, 2025, Gwendolyn Wheeler departed this earthly life and entered into the loving embrace of her Heavenly Father. Gwen was born on June 19, 1954, the beloved daughter of the late Ollie Mae Johnson and the late Claude Green.
Gwen accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was baptized at Macedonia Baptist Church in Richmond and remained steadfast in her faith throughout her life. Gwen attended Greater New Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church until her health failed her. She received her education in the City of Cartersville school system, beginning at Summer Hill School and graduating from Cartersville High School in 1972.
Early in her marriage to Wayne Wheeler, Gwen was blessed with two beautiful daughters. She devoted her life to loving and nurturing her family. Known for dressing her daughters impeccably as they grew up, Gwen’s eye for style and attention to detail became traits they carry with them to this day.
She inherited a sharp wit from her mother, Ollie Mae—always ready with a loving remark that could gently humble or share a difficult truth. Gwen faced life’s challenges head-on. She made her own choices, stood by them, and lived with strength and integrity. Even in her final days, through the pain, she expressed her love for her family in the unique, fierce, and enduring way that only she could. She was feisty to the end.
Gwen was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Wheeler; her daughter, Tamatha ‘Tammy’ Wheeler-Blair; her mother, Ollie Mae Johnson; her father, Claude Green; her brothers, Wallace ‘Jeff’ Johnson, Tommy Green, Lamar Green, and Allen Green; and her mother-in-law, Ruth Wheeler.
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving daughter, Monica Wheeler; grandchildren, Byron, Kaelyn, India, Ashton, and Mondreco II; great-granddaughter, Janiah; sisters Priscilla Milton (Grear), Linda Benham (Steven), Ernestine Edwards, Glenda Darby, and June Williams (Darrell); brothers Danny Johnson (Eileen), Tommy Johnson, Kenneth Johnson, and Terry Green; sister-in-law Myra Livsey (Duncan); as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and a village of friends and extended family who loved and supported her throughout her life.
We also offer a special thank you to Margaret Green, Chelsey Bryant and Shirley Gamble as her loving caregivers.
