Hershel Jerome Elliott of Cartersville,Georgia transitioned on Friday night at 10:30 P.M. on November 1, 2024 at the age of 75. Hershel was born in Kingston, Georgia on June 20, 1949 to the late Robert Elliott and Bessie Alene McClure Elliott Stephens.
He was affectionately known as “Oxman” and “Hercules” all his life. He was a fun loving child; his sister Jeannie said that when she was in trouble or needed his help, he was always there to protect and help her fight anybody who threatened her. Hershel accepted Christ into his life at an early age and really loved the Lord and his church family. Although as he got older he would fall asleep and swear that he heard every word the preacher said, and then he would just smile.
Hershel was the type of person that people gravitated to because of his energetic personality. He was a loyal friend that loved everybody. “Uncle Herk” was the uncle that his nieces and nephews loved. In fact, his niece Tawana always said that everybody should have an Uncle Herk.
He was educated in the Bartow County School System and graduated from Cass High School with the Class of 1968, after graduating he attended Coosa Valley Technical Institute for two years and later enlisted in the United States Army for six years of dedicated service.
Specialist 4 Elliott was an honorable military soldier that served his country well. During his enlistment he was a Demolition Specialist, Food Service Specialist, Transportation Specialist and supervised the clean-up detail for the barracks. He was Honorably Discharged in 1979 returned home and became employed at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. After over thirty years of dedicated service he retired and began working with the Bartow County Schools as a Custodian for eleven years.
Hershel met his lovely wife Lavinia at the age of fourteen and married her at the age of nineteen, to this union two children were born, Michele and Jerome Elliott.
He is preceded in death by his parents; Robert Elliott and Bessie Alene McClure Stephens; sisters, Jennie Bell Stewart and Alice Faye Larkin; brothers, Billy Earl McClure, Bobby Elliott, and Lee Shield Elliott.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife of fifty-six years, Lavinia Diane Elliott; daughter, Michele Elliott; son, Harold Jerome Elliott; brothers, Robert (Mary) Elliott, Troy Elliott, and William(Darlene) Elliott; sister, Jeannie Elliott Pitts-Lovingood (Warren); and a host of special nieces and nephews, special cousins; and other relatives and friends.
As Oxman always said,"THIS IS NOT BYE IT IS SEE YOU LATER."
