Larry Jones Obituary

Mr. Larry Ellis Jones, 72, of Atlanta, Georgia formerly of Cartersville, Georgia passed away Thursday, December 10, 2020.

A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, December 18, 2020 at 1:00 P.M. at Pleasant Hill Church Cemetery, 1020 Mission Road, Cartersville, Georgia 30120.

Due to COVID-19 regulations and guidelines, physical distancing practices will be in place, and MASK ARE REQUIRED for those attending the service. The family is the main concern during this time of bereavement and space will be limited. We have to ensure the family is able to attend the service, so there is a possibility of some friends not being admitted. However, the service will be LIVE-STREAMED.

Larry Ellis Jones was born October 11,1948 in the Mission Community of Cartersville, Georgia and was the youngest of six sons born to the late Lucy Mae Robinson Jones andHubert Jones, Sr. Larry grew up in a Christian home and in his youth was baptized at the Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church. He was educated in the Bartow County School System and graduated from Summer Hill High School in 1966. Following high school he briefly attended Fort Valley State University in  Fort Valley, Georgia.

In 1971 Larry married his childhood sweetheart, Sharon Green, also of Cartersville. They made their home in Atlanta, Georgia and to their union two children were born. Larry was very instrumental in the rearing of his grandson, Quenton Rucker, on whom he left a positive impact. Professionally, Larry worked for Lockheed Martin Corporation and for Norfolk Southern Railway, as a locomotive engineer, from where he retired in 1990.

Larry was very active in his community where he coached Little League Baseball and served as a mentor and role model for many youths. He was a member of the 100 Black Men of South Metro Atlanta, Inc. where he served on various committees and found much joy in mentoring the young men who participated in their Rites of Passage Program. Larry loved to travel and made sure that he stayed active in both the Cartersville and Atlanta Communities.

Larry loved having family and friends "come over to their home" for cookouts, holiday gatherings, or just sitting around chit-chatting and listening to music. He loved reminiscing "the good old days" and recalling great memories while viewing family photos. And, we can never forget that he was a stylish dresser. Larry was truly loved by many and has left an indelible mark on those who crossed his path.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Hubert Jones, Jr., Lawrence Jones , Lewis Jones, and Rudolph Jones; sister, Clara Sue Jones Hardy; and nephew, Bernard Jones, Sr.

Larry leaves his cherished love and memories to his wife of 49 years, Sharon Elaine Jones; children, Reka Jones and Dr. Vincent (Detorria) Jones; brother, Donald (Faye) Jones; nephew, Gregory Solomon, who grew up like a brother in his parent's home; seven grandchildren, Quenton Rucker, Cameron Jones, Kalon Jones, Caris Jones, Kaiya Jones, Christion Jones, and Kembryn Jones; one great-grandchild, Za'Hara Rucker; aunt, Ann Robinson; nieces and nephews, Jamil Hardy, Dexter Jones, Meleisa (Donald) Pollard, Erin Jones, and Jennifer Jones; three special cousins, whom he considered sisters, Hattie Ruth Hill, Sandra Solomon and Theresa Wilkins; a cousin that he considered his "Baby Girl", Beverly Jones Callahan; sisters-in-law, Mary Alice (Melvin) Johnson, Rosanna Shaw, Sallie Jones, and Marcella Jones; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and special friends.

Larry passed away peacefully at his home , professing his love for the Lord, surrounded by his immediate family.

We are comforted in knowing that Larry is now with the Lord and his loved ones.

"Peace I leave you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid."- John 14:27
