Margaretta Sewell Garnigan Eppinger, 77 of Cartersville, Georgia passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 30, 2023. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 12:00P.M.(Noon) at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 147 Jones Street, Cartersville, Georgia. The body will lie in state in the church from 11:00A.M. until the hour of service. Interment will follow in Providence Cemetery ,165 Old Tennessee Rd.NE , Cartersville,Georgia 30121. The family will receive friends and family on Friday, October 6, 2023 from 6:00P.M. - 7:00 PM at Mack Eppinger and Sons Funeral Home, 210 North Bartow Street, Cartersville, Georgia 30120. On Saturday afternoon, September 30, 2023, God in His infinite wisdom, and gentle grace sent His angels down to welcome home our beloved Margaretta Sewell Garnigan Eppinger, to a place of peace and eternal rest.
Margaretta was born August 15, 1946, in Akron, Ohio to Mrs. Margaret Witt and adopted and raised in Cartersville, Geogia by her aunt and uncle Mr. Allen and Mrs. Essie Sewell who loved her dearly. She was educated at Summer Hill High School where she was an excellent basketball player. It was at Summer Hill where she met William Horace Garnigan, Jr and to this union three wonderful children were born. Margaretta enrolled in night school to obtain her GED while also obtaining her LPN license. She worked many years at Sam Howell Memorial Hospital, Cartersville Child Care Center, Good Neighbor Shelter, and Anheuser-Busch before retiring.
Margaretta was a faithful member of Mt Zion Missionary Baptist Church where she attended Bible Study, Sunday School, sang in the E.H. Mitchell Choir and was known for coordinating and writing plays for Christmas on the Hill. She was also one of many founding members of the Afro American Social Civic Association (AASCA). “Red” or “Aunt Red” as she was known by her family and many friends, had a kind heart and a generous spirit. She never met a stranger and would always be there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret Witt, Essie and Allen Sewell, and brother Charles Edward Guthrie.
Margaretta leaves to cherish her memories; children, William D Garnigan, Sr (Chenedra), Dwona N Alexander, and Shundi P Jones (Charles); grandchildren, Ashley Alexander, Morgan Alexander, Shanteria Thomas, Valerie A Jones, Jasmine Amaya (Anthony), William D “DJ” Garnigan, Jr, (Cristina), Alexis Garnigan and Charles “Chaz” Jones; great grandchildren, Dianna Garnigan, Gabriel Amaya, Avah Amaya and Olivia Garnigan; sisters, Dale Griffin (Willis), Deana Rowland, Cheryl Turner (Gary), Cora Nelson (Dennis), Bridgett Eppinger Greene (Ron); brother, Lawrence Garnigan; special friends ,Tony Baugh, Diane Morgan, Victor Morgan, Rosemary Creamer, Cynthia Wallace and Sue Cox; special caregivers, Chanteal Overton Berry and Samuel Stanley; nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
