In the early morning on Thursday January 29th, 2026, Gloria Edith Broughton-Beavers, age 87of Cartersville, GA peacefully entered into eternal rest in the comforts of her home.Gloria was born in Marshall, MI on May 5, 1938 to Liston and Carrie Broughton. She was the youngest of eleven brothers and sisters. During her early childhood her family faced unique challenges during segregation, as the only black family living there at the time. At the age of 14 she and her family moved to Battle Creek, MI. She graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1956.
She began her career as a Stereographer shortly thereafter at the Federal Building for the Department of Defense. She played a significant role in the Natural Disaster Department where she had the distinguished honor of being detailed to work in Washington, D.C. for a Secretarial Pool. She was granted a unique opportunity to work at the Pentagon, as well as the Executive Office of The President who at that time was President John F. Kennedy. She could oftentimes wave to him upon his arrival as she watched from the office where she worked.
In 1959 she married Robert L. “Jackey” Beavers, who was in the Air Force at that time, stationed at Fort Custer. Together, they welcomed three cherished children: Robin, Kevin, and Caryn.
The dawning of the Equal Opportunity Act in the 1960s found her courageously navigating a landscape fraught with discrimination, advocating for equal rights through her engagement with the NAACP and Urban League as a "Gopher." She faced many adversities with unwavering grace throughout her working life, and despite facing prejudice she remained resilient, using her experiences to uplift those around her. In the early 1970s, after the passing of her mother, Gloria faced the heart-wrenching decision to move south with her family. This transition brought feelings of loneliness, fear, and disconnection, yet it also led Gloria on a profound spiritual journey. Her husband “Jackey” as everyone called him, traveled throughout the south with his band, and later opened a Nightclub.
During a moment of heartfelt prayer, as being disconnected from family was beginning to take a toll on her, she experienced a transformative encounter with God. “One day on my knees praying to God asking Him to show me what “Love” really was- He touched me with his presence. I could actually feel in my spirit. It changed my whole life and gave me the peace I longed for. ‘O’ The Love that filled my Soul. Something happened and now I know- He touched me and made me whole! Praise the Lord! Bobbie Mason wrote a song titled “Show Me How To Love” and that so appropriately tells my testimony. Jesus was my first genuine Love and still is, for he has been there for me through many griefs and sorrows; The loss of my daughter Caryn at 40 years in 2006, the loss of my Husband in 2008, and also raising three of my grandchildren whom she left behind. He has been there through many challenges in my life, and he has never left me when I was afraid. God has kept all of his promises to me: He has allowed me to see four great grandchildren, and most of all- showed me how to love others. I am deeply grateful.”
