The earthly reign of Queen Ella Green Lowe began on July 5, 1940. She was born in Cartersville, Georgia to the late Clem Green, Jr. and Idell Fletcher Green. Their first daughter to survive infancy, they aptly named and dubbed her “Queen”. Raised as one of nine siblings, she grew up in a happy and musically noisy household and was always fiercely protected by her older brothers Ike, Bobbie, and Clayton. In turn, she fiercely protected and nurtured her younger siblings James, Johnny, Carol, June and Drucilla. She attended Summer Hill High School and graduated with the Class of 1958. After completing high school, she attended world-renowned Spelman College with her two cousins and best friends, Mary Alice Green Johnson and Patricia Fletcher Knight. While at Spelman the three of them met an upstart Civil Rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr. and were able to participate in the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement. At perhaps less serious moments, they used their considerable musical talents to perform as “The Glitterettes”, undoubtedly delighting audiences in the Atlanta University Center. At Spelman Queen received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art, minoring in Education. After college she returned to Cartersville to begin her teaching career, teaching Art and Second Grade at the Summer Hill Elementary School for three years. During this time, in addition to working full time, she obtained her Master of Arts Degree in Education from West Georgia College (now West Georgia University). She then participated in the integration of the teaching staff of the Cartersville City School System by going to the then all-white Douglas Street Primary School where she taught Art to grades 1-3 for the next 9 years. Although the name of the school to which she was assigned changed, Queen remained in the Cartersville City School System, teaching Art and Second Grade for the next 20 years, retiring after 32 years as a devoted, compassionate educator. Not done, however, two years after retiring, Queen began teaching in the Etowah Housing After School Program where she served tirelessly for nearly 20 years.
It was while teaching at Summer Hill that Queen met the love of her life, Ralph Lowe. On December 18, 1966, Ralph and Queen were married and enjoyed and celebrated each other for 54 years. In their union Ralph and Queen were blessed with one beautiful daughter, Ellisa, who later added a son-in-love (Byron) and their greatest joy -- their precious granddaughter, Jiyah.
Queen always found ways to serve and give unselfishly to her community, family and friends, working with such agencies as the Les Savants and Atlanta Christian Cursillo and alongside Ralph in other various clubs and organizations. She quietly, graciously, generously, and without the need for thanks or recognition, gave her time, talents and resources to anyone in whom she saw a need. She loved with a genuine Christian heart.
Queen was a devoted member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. There she served as a member of the Deaconess Board, the Women’s Ministry, the Matrons, the E.H. Mitchell Choir and the Jeffrey Milner Memorial Mass Choir.
In her last years and although her health was failing, Queen was happy and content, basking in the return of love and devotion from her dutiful daughter, son-in-love, granddaughter, and countless family members and friends. On August 16, 2024, she surrendered her earthly crown and slipped into eternity in her unassuming way, surrounded by family and friends.
Her parents, Clem, Jr. and Idell Green and her brothers, Isaiah, Bobbie and James Green, preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Ellisa Lowe Douglas and son-in-love, Byron R. Douglas; granddaughter, Jiyah Lowe Tomlin; two brothers, Clayton and Johnny (Bonnie) Green; three sisters, Carol and June D. Green, and Drucilla ( Carl)McClellan ; two sisters-in-law, Eva and Arena Lowe and a host of adoring nieces and nephews that she will forever love, with a special connection to her beloved and devoted nephews, Guy Wendell ( Vanessa)Green and James K. Lowe, Jr. From an abundance of cousins that she cherished and loved unconditionally a few that must be mentioned are Mary Alice Green Johnson, her sister/cousin with whom she shared her whole life and Patricia Fletcher Knight. Among the many young people that she nurtured and called godchildren are Susan and Hannah Thomas, Bianca Dean, Valarie Thomas, Marty Wheeler and Michael Todd Dean.
There are so many friends that she made throughout her life that made her time on earth unforgettable that they cannot all be named here. Some who lovingly entered and remained constants in the lives of Queen, Ralph, and Ellisa that must be mentioned are Vyola and Charles Foster, Patricia and Sherman Broadnax, James Stanley, III ,(“Bibby”) and Ruby Morgan, Barbara Wheeler, Bishop Pete and Jean Smith, Rainey McQueen, and Weldon and Shirley Dudley.
Queen was love. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (New International Version)
