Calvin Abbott, 52, of Cartersville, GA. passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2017. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 1:00pm at Cartersville First Baptist Church, 241 Douthit Ferry Road, Cartersville, GA. 30120. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 10, 2017 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm at the Mack Eppinger and Sons Funeral Home.

Bernard Calvin Abbott was the son of Emma Jean Abbott, born on March 23, 1964 in Cartersville, Georgia. He was educated in the Bartow County School System. Calvin was a graduate of Cartersville High School with the class of 1984.

Calvin was raised by his Grandmother, Ora Johnson; she took Calvin to church every Sunday and taught him how to love the Lord. He accepted Christ at an early age at the Faith Temple Church of God in Christ, under Elder Simon Shuman. After her passing he joined Redeeming Overcoming Church of God under Rev. Billy Weems. Calvin joined Community Outreach Church of God in Christ, under Elder Arenza Hines.

Mack Eppinger Sr. met Calvin in 1985, when he purchased the funeral home. He realized this young man had a love for this business and a servant’s heart. He took Calvin under his wings and put him to work. Calvin started working on funeral services with him and before you knew it he was the unofficial “owner “of Mack Eppinger & Sons Funeral Home. Calvin was very devoted to his job! After Mack’s death, Calvin continued working at the funeral home under the leadership of Bridgett Greene. He continued learning the business and with his great personality he met a lot of people and left an everlasting impression on them. He was highly respected by other Funeral Directors and brought comfort to many families. Calvin had the ability to draw people to him and that’s just what he did.

Calvin was a servant and his mission in life was to take care and serve the people. We know it takes a village to raise a child and Summer Hill was his village. They took care of Calvin and he in return took care of the Seniors on Summer Hill, which earned him the name “The Mayor of Summer Hill” his responsibilities included cutting grass, making sure their garbage cans were placed on the curb on Tuesday for pickup and anything that needed to be done.

Calvin enjoyed having fun, hanging out with the guys, eating chicken and talking about the Lord, so the staff at the funeral home promoted him from “Preacher” to the funeral home “Bishop”. In his past time, which he did not have much of; he watched his favorite shows In the Heat of the Night, Law and Order and Gospel shows.

Those left to hold in their hearts, precious memories, uncle, Bobby Abbott (Mildred); aunt, Catherine Bray (Samuel), special cousins, Barbara Green (Clayton) and Bishop W.S. Weems (Betty), LaQuana Marshall, Darius Bray and Latoya Bray and a host of other cousins, friends and the Bartow community.
